On the line of the Roman Road. The Romans quarried ironstone in The Sussex Weald, then constructed a road, from the northern side of the South Downs,to cart their iron, which they smelted on location, all the way to London,to receive the Official Seal, for export to Rome. There are parts of that Road, which still exist, where it was surfaced with iron slag;with extant wheel ruts. That's at Holtye Common,a few miles to the north of here.
