The older building,in red sandstone,with a central tower,was constructed in AD 1896.
The "newer" school was constructed in the early 1970's.Just behind the tree stood the "temporary" English department, with such notorieties as "Fat Tam" McColl,Head Teacher ,and Mr. MacDonald. It was customary if Mr McColl decided to punish an errant pupil, with belting, that he would tell the unfortunate to go and borrow Mr.MacDonald's belt.Everyone knew that for asking to borrow his belt,Mr.MacDonald would belt the offender and then loan them his belt.Upon returning to Mr.McColl's room, one would find he'd carried on teaching in one's absence and you'd have to wait, like a stuckie,in the corner of the room, for him to make a break, and tell you he'd changed his mind and wasn't going to punish you after all,and so to please return the belt to Mr. MacDonald. In my case that did not happen.I was personally belted by Fat Tam.That was at 15.35 on a Tuesday.By 15.50hrs all the school knew that Fat Tam had belted the Rector's son.
