Roman fortlet on the Stainmore Pass

Stainmore Pass,Cumbria, England

Just to the left of the modern road and,in shot, directly above the reddish - brown weed, can be seen,on the horizon,a level, straight line with a v-shaped gap in the middle. That is the northern gateway of a Roman fortlet, guarding the summit of the Roman Road over the Stainmore Pass. The fortlet is known by the name of "Maiden Castle".The Romans were the first people to make a road over the pass and the modern road still largely follows the same route today.
