Wave Hill Gardens (on the Hudson River) (July 2011)

Wave Hill is a former estate, with much history, which is comprised of 28 acres of gardens, greenhouses and woodlands perched on a hill overlooking the Hudson River and the Palisades. In 1843, jurist William Lewis Morris built Wave Hill House as a country home. From 1866-1903, William Henry Appleton owned the house. He enlarged it in 1866-69 and again in 1890. During that time, it was leased to prominent New Yorkers, including Theodore Roosevelt, Sr. and his son Teddy, as well as to Mark Twain. In 1903, George W. Perkins, a partner of J.P. Morgan, purchased Wave Hill House. Perkins devoted his time and energy to planning the grounds with gardens, terraces and greenhouses. It has been open to the public since 1965, five years after the Perkins-Freeman family deeded the property to the City of New York. Wave Hill is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It is an incredibly serene, urban oasis, filled with bountiful gardens, well-landscaped grounds, and spectacular views of the Hudson River and the Palisades. It is a treasure that shouldn't be missed.
