Trieste is a small but beautiful city facing the Adriatic Sea on the Bay of Sistiana. It is located in the foothills of the Alps near the Slovenian border. From 1719 to 1891, it was an imperial free port. After 2 centuries of struggle with it's rival Venice, Trieste placed itself, in 1382, under the control of the Duke of Austria and became Austrian Crown land in 1867. It was ceded to Italy in 1919, was occupied by Yugoslavia in 1945, but was returned to Italy in 1954. The city's inhabitants are a melting pot of Slavic, Germanic and Latin descent. Despite its prior Austrian status, Trieste preserved it’s linguistic and cultural ties with Italy. While small, Trieste is charming, boasting 4 beautiful palaces. Nothing could be more pleasant than dining on Trieste’s northern Italian pasta and veal dishes at a café in Trieste’s gorgeous Piazza Unita d'Italia.

The 4 palaces were all built while Trieste was the most important and busiest seaport in the vast Habsburg empire.
