The Union Church of Pocantico Hills (October 2009)

The Union Church of Pocantico Hills is located close to Kykuit Manor, the Rockefeller family estate, built by John Davison Rockefeller, Sr., near Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow, NY. The Rockefeller family built it for the community and for their own use. One would never suspect that a small church such as the Union Church would contain masterpieces of stained glass windows by two of the 20th century’s most prominent artists, Henri Matisse (1969-1954) and Marc Chagall (1887-1985). The Matisse stained glass window, which was completed in 1954, was Matisse’s last work of art before he died. It was commissioned by Nelson Rockefeller in memory of his mother, Abby Aldrich Rockefeller, a founder of the Museum of Modern Art. The largest and the most prominent of the 9 Chagall stained glass windows is based on the biblical story of the “Good Samaritan.” It was commisioned by David Rockefeller in 1963 as a memorial to his father, John D. Rockefeller, Jr. Later, the commission was expanded to include all 8 windows in the nave of the church to memorialize other members of the Rockefeller family, including Nelson’s youngest son, Michael Rockefeller, who died on an expedition in the Asmat region of southwestern New Guinea. The 8 windows in the nave were chosen by the Rockefeller family and Marc Chagall from biblical stories. Unfortunately, one is not allowed to photograph the stained glass windows. Therefore, a visit to the Union Church of Pocantico Hills is a “must,” since the windows are spectacular!
