Sri Lankan Countryside (December 2010)

Sri Lanka is a large island in the Indian Ocean, to the southwest of the Bay of Bengal. The climate of Sri Lanka is warm and tropical. The country is diverse and verdant. There are many mountains, waterfalls and forests in Sri Lanka. Forests at one time covered nearly the entire island, but by the late 20th century, the number of forests diminished due to development. Many crops grow in Sri Lanka, including rice, tea, coffee, rubber, cinnamon and coconut. Sri Lanka is home to several wild elephant herds (in 1815, an estimated 30,000 elephants lived on the island). Today, there are about 3,000 elephants remaining. The Yala National Park in the southeast protects herds of elephant, deer, and peacocks, and the Wilpattu National Park in the northwest preserves the habitats of many water birds, such as storks, pelicans, ibis, and spoonbills. Much of Sri Lanka is beautiful and unspoiled. It is definitely worth visiting.
