Sibiu, Romania (May 2006)

Sibiu was the largest and wealthiest of the seven walled citadels in Romania built in the 12th century by German craftsmen and merchants (known as Transylvanian Saxons). Sibiu’s impressive buildings and the fortifications were built by the wealthy guilds of that time. Today, Old Town still retains its original grandeur and the Germanic flavor. Sections of the medieval wall still guard the historic area, with beautiful 17th century buildings and church-dominated squares such as Great Square and Little Square. Most of Sibiu's historic sights are located in the Upper Town, while the Lower Town is lined with colorful houses on cobblestone streets and protected by city walls and defensive towers that overlook the Cibin River. Sibiu is rich in history, and no trip to Romania would be complete with a visit there.
