Québec City, Canada (July 31, 2006)

Québec City stands on top of Cap Diamant, overlooking the St. Lawrence River. It was first settled by the French in 1608. After 3 centuries of French and English colonial conquests, it became the capital of Québec Province in 1867. Québec was named from a native Algonquin word meaning "where the river narrows". Practically all sights of interest are in the Old Town (Vieux-Québec), which is divided in two: Haute-Ville ("Upper Town") surrounded by a stone wall built by both French and British armies and the neighborhood between the walled city and the river, Basse-Ville ("Lower Town"). The two are connected by the Escalier Casse-Cou ("Breakneck Stairs") and an easier funicular. At the heart of Old Québec is Fairmont Le Château Frontenac, a 19th century castle-like hotel that stands on the city’s highest bluff. The charm and ambience of historic Québec with its uneven cobblestones streets, cafés and restaurants, charming boutiques, elegant squares, and mimes and street life make it a unique destination and the cradle of French civilization in North America.
