Locust Grove Estate (September 2022)

Locust Grove Estate was built in 1850 by the inventor of the telegraph and Morse Code, Samuel F. B. Morse. Located in Poughkeepsie, New York, it comprises 200 acres of landscaped property overlooking the Hudson River. It was constructed in an Italianate style by architect Alexander Jackson Davis. In 1900, Locust Grove Estate was purchased by the family of William and Martha Young. They had been renting the house since 1895. They put their own stamp on the house by expanding, upgrading and renovating it. Mrs. Young’s grandfather made his fortune in dry goods. The Young family occupied the house for 80 years. In 1975, the last inhabitant of the estate, Annette Young died. She created a foundation so that Locust Grove Estate would be preserved and protected. It was opened to the public in 1979.
