Island Princess Cruise Ship Photos, Glacier Bay and the College Fjord (June 2011)

Island Princess is a Princess Cruises ship that sails through the Inside Passage of Alaska from Vancouver, B.C. to Whittier, Alaska. She is one of two Princess ships built in France by Chantiers de l'Atlantique (in 2003). It is a medium sized cruise ship, that has since been renovated, so it shows no signs of wear and tear. Glacier Bay Basin in southeastern Alaska encompasses the Glacier Bay and surrounding mountains and glaciers. In 1986, UNESCO declared it within a World Biosphere Reserve. In 1992, UNESCO also included this area as a part of a World Heritage site. It was a large single glacier of solid ice until early 18th century when it started retreating. Over the last more than 200 years, it retreated by 65 miles. College Fjord is a fjord located in the northern sector of Prince William Sound in Alaska. It was discovered in 1899 during the Harriman Expedition, which included a Harvard and an Amherst professor. They named many of the glaciers after elite colleges. According to Bruce Molina, author of Alaska's Glaciers, "They took great delight in ignoring Princeton.”
