Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (December 2008)

Ho Chi Minh City (formerly known as Saigon) is situated on the banks of the Saigon River. The entire metropolitan area of the city has a population of more than 9 million people making it the most populated city in Vietnam and in all of Indochina. It was renamed after the communist takeover of South Vietnam in 1975 after Ho Chi Minh, the former North Vietnamese leader and national hero. Many buildings in H.C.M.C. are influenced by the French colonial style since Vietnam was conquered in 1859 by the French and became a French colony. Today, the city's core is still adorned with wide elegant boulevards and historic French colonial buildings. H.C.M.C. is Vietnam’s most modern and vibrant city.
