Dia Art Foundation and Beacon, NY (March 2012)

Dia Beacon is located in the Hudson Valley, in Beacon, NY. It houses the Dia Art Foundation's collection of art from the 1960s to the present. The museum, which opened in 2003, occupies a former Nabisco box-printing factory, built in 1929, that was renovated as an art museum. The use of a factory building for the installation of contemporary art was an innovative use of a huge industrial space. Dia Beacon’s expansive spaces and excellent natural lighting are perfectly suited to the needs of large-scale installations, paintings, and sculptures. No art museum or gallery in New York City can match Dia Beacon’s vast openness for displaying large works of art. It is worth the 80-minute trip by train from Manhattan (or trips from elsewhere) to view Dia Beacon’s huge open space as well as its excellent contemporary art.

As a former factory, the interior galleries are huge, with lots of light and air.
