Danang, Vietnam and Vicinity (December 2008)

Danang is a major port and the fourth largest city in Vietnam located on the South China Sea. It is very picturesque with some of the most beautiful beaches in Vietnam. The poetic Han River and its bridge enhance Danang’s beauty. The Han River Bridge was the first swing bridge built in Vietnam. Danang's name originated from the Cham word Da Nak, meaning "opening of big river". In 1858, French troops landed under the orders of Napoleon III, beginning their colonial occupation in the area. It was renamed Tourane by the French. During the Vietnam War, Danang was home to a major U.S. and South Vietnamese air base. Since the war, the population has grown to over 1 million inhabitants.
