This block of apartments were built around the 60s (I think), but due to undergound subway construction works nearby, it caused the ground to be unstable. The authorities then gave them exactly one month to move out, much to the shock of the residents, many of whom lived there for some 40-odd years. Some residents refused to budge initially, but when the authorities have their mind set on bulldozing your house to the ground, there really isn't much you can do about it. The deadline was extended, and I dropped by the place one day before the final deadline. It was a bit surreal to see this woman still sweeping the front of her T-shirt printing shop, still mindful of keeping the place clean and tidy, something she must've done regularly for the past many years.
Today, Hock Kee house is nothing but a grass patch. It's as if the place never existed before...
