This white-eye was feasting on the juicy pulp of a ripe papaya, growing alongside our cabin at Wai'anapanapa State Park, near Hana. I managed to shake a papaya loose to try - it was the finest we had during our stay.
The white-eye, one of the most common birds in the islands, was introduced in the 1920s for pest control. IT's now considered a threat to native bird species because it's a vector for avian parasites.
