The Blackhouses of Gearrannan

Isle of Lewis

Now restored to accommodate guests, these houses from hundreds of
years ago had fires burning at all times inside the houses which had no
chimneys, and produced black soot inside. Smoke would flow out of small
windows. It is said that the smoke would kill bugs that lived in the grassy roofs.

A rough way to live, but I guess their descendants survived to rent out the houses! An excellent image and commentary.

I wonder what the incidence of lung cancer and other diseases was for the people who lived there. Fabulous composition that leads us through the narrow path between them all.

Love this shot of these antiquated houses, very nicely portrayed - I think I would pass on staying here tho' :)
