I photographed this gull on Revere Beach ( Winthrop end) on Jan 29th and then again on FEB 5th. Another gull with an unusual bill! Some of the Feb 5th photos were shot with the sun almost directly behind the subject bird. I lightened the exposure on some of these photos to try and get detail on the feathers. I have noted which ones these were . All other photos have not been edited except for cropping. The bird then took off and returned about 5 to 10 minutes later. I was the able to move to have the sun behind me. This bird has an all grayish brown appearance with no distinguished markings on scaps, tertials (solid for the most part), or coverts. The short wing projection is very noticeable also in the newer photos, barely 2 primaries projecting beyond tail. The flight shots ( mostly taken on Jan 29th and at the end of gallery) show a mostly dark tail, if not all dark. Primaries seem to be bicolored from above yet seem to have a whitish look on the underside. There is some grayish feathers in scaps which appear to have a dark line / center. Overall the plumage is messy and confusing, not well marked. This bird seemed smaller than the surrounding HEGU's and yet bigger than the RBGU's. The difference in bill size and shape is noticeable in some of the photos, especially the newer ones. I leave this gull unidentified - hopefully just for the time being.
