The lion has been a traditional symbol of the Jewish people since Biblical times when Jacob blessed his son, Judah, comparing him to a lion. It has appeared through the ages on ritual artifacts including chanukiot (for burning Chanukah candles) and on the silver ornamental plates on the Torah scrolls, to mention a few.
In modern times, the lion has become the symbol for the municipality of Jerusalem and is used on the city flag and on all public signs, street lamps, manhole covers, etc.
Local artists have also used the lion of Jerusalem to produce some very interesting artwork. Some photos here are taken of Yuval Mahler's 3-D metal sculptures with a humorous twist.
Enjoy.
