Cosmos is in the marigold family. The traditional flower of Dia de los Muertos, Day of the Dead, the marigold represents the sun's rays. The sun symbolizes that the dead spirits have not lost their place in the universe. Spanish priests grew the native Mexican Cosmos in their mission gardens. The evenly placed petals led them to christen the flower "Cosmos," the Greek word for harmony or ordered universe. Cosmos is easy to grow in patio pots or gardens and is a favorite of butterflies. This bloom has a diameter of 1.5 inches.
