Outlaw Roots
Jesus (perhaps the world’s most famous outlaw, depending on one’s point of view)
upon his life-size crucifix statue prominently displayed in the Conquistadora Chapel
inside the Saint Francis Basilica in Santa Fe, New Mexico.
According to a long time docent parishioner, several years ago a local member
of a notorious motorcycle gang reformed his outlaw ways and asked his mother
to cut his hair. She did and used his hair to make the Jesus wig and gave it to the church.
The story is not verified, but, in light of the four hundred year tradition in the Conquistadora Chapel
of faithful followers making clothing and jewelry
for the adjacent Madonna, http://www.pbase.com/sunlightpix/image/142045655
it seems plausible.
In the words of Pontius Pilate "What is truth?"
Either way, I found the statue compelling.
