While Father Junipero Serra is buried in splendor under the chapel, this statue of Mary is an outsider, cracked and weather-beaten, and draped with spider webs. Behind her are chapel windows and a flower. She overlooks the graves of unnamed native people who were forced to convert to catholicism and toiled as the slave labor to run the mission. Many died from exposure to European diseases.
