Meteor Crater

The world’s best preserved meteorite impact site in Northern Arizona near Winslow. Meteor Crater is the result of a collision between a piece of an asteroid traveling at 26,000 miles per hour and planet Earth approximately 50,000 years ago. Meteor Crater is nearly one mile across, 2.4 miles in circumference and more than 550 feet deep.
At 550 feet deep the Crater is deep enough so that the Washington Monument could stand up in it. That is as high as a 60 story building. And it is more than 4,000 feet across, big enough to hold 20 football fields at its base. The rim measures 2.4 miles in circumference so that, if seats were placed on the sloping sides, more than two million spectators could watch those 20 simultaneous football games.
