This would have been a great situation for an HDR image! (three bracketed exposures blended together to get a full dynamic range).

This is a great and tough shot as
isabel said and doing the 3 exposure would have been a great experiemnt. I wonder if some light post processing in the shadow areas could with that?

Super tough lighting situation. Just about impossible for any digital camera to handle the dynamic range. I know you use a tripod. What a perfect opportunity for an HDR image combining two or three images, one exposed for that patch of sun, one for the rocks and one for the sky. Have never done this, mind you, but I love when other people bother with it! :-)
