8/15/04

Day 2, Sun., 8/15 –
Up early. Great breakfast buffett in the hotel...very leisurely. Very flaky cinnamon rolls!
Walked to masss at Saint Stephen's Cathedral. Mass was entirely in German. It was a very high mass with the bishop and 5 priests concelebrating the Feast of the Assumption. Great choir sang very well. I suspect it may have been a visiting choir.
We took many pictures inside and outside the church.
Climbed the 343 steps in the steeple to view the city. Only "fair" because of construction scaffolding on the tower.
Wandered the city; found a great outdoor cafe for lunch. It was a famous 1497 restaurant & pub next to St. Augustine's Church. Goulash Soup for Hugh, Veggie Souffle for Sue.
More wandering & picture-taking all afternoon.
Franz Joseph Square, Roman ruins (200BC?). Met Peter & Carole there. They had just arrived this morning. We walked a bit and found a place for Gelato together.
Took 15-30 minutes for a nap, then the welcome dinner at the hotel. Met the rest of the people who would be touring with us. Our tour guide, Carl, explained what "tour options" were available and we were asked to make a decision about what "extras" we wanted to take part in...we chose 9 of the 11 offered...didn't want to miss anything.
To bed ~ 10:30p.m.
