Santa marta, Riohacha and the Wayuu

Santa Marta is another ancient colonial city, the first colony in South America. Riohacha is set on the arid coastline in far west Colombia near the Venezuelan border. Amidst the goat rancherias, we visited one of the traditional Rancheria of the Wayuu culture. The indigenous Wayuu people inhabit the arid La Guajira Peninsula straddling the Venezuela-Colombia border, on the Caribbean Sea coast, numbering about 150,000. They were never subjugated by the Spanish.
