Benque is a Catholic town and Easter is celebrated with a lot of emotion. The town and the church put in a lot passion and energy to prepare for this week. The main events, starting with Palm Sunday with the re-enactment of Jesus’ entry to the city of Jerusalem and ending on Friday with “El Santo Entierro” (the solemn procession of Jesus’ burial). Friday’s procession rout is decorated with “Afombras” colored saw dust carpets, a tradition in Benque over a decade. For some of these intricately detailed works of art take up to seven or eight hours to make for the moments it takes the procession to walk over them. The week ends with a number of church activities and off course a Sunday mass.
