Increasing the contrast a little, of the full frame image, better reveals the enormous
but very faint, outer halo made up of millions of stars, that surrounds NGC 253
NB: To preserve authenticity and accuracy, this feature was enhanced by applying a
modest but global contrast stretch and not by simply lassoing or applying arbitrary
brightness increases to the image. First revealed by Dr David Malin, in deep enhanced
UK Schmidt plates (bottom right) and rarely revealed in full colour images and as in
Dr Malins original version seen here, this is the true shape and extent of this feature.
