From September 15th through the 19th, myself, Bob Myers, Ken LaBelle, David CinqMars, Sean McNulty, and Eric Moreau visited the Motor City to observe and document their fire department at work. Recent numbers have the Detroit Fire Department battling around 500 arson fires each month. The cities arson problem is facilitated by the abundance of vacant buildings in the city. The department is aggressive and extremely well at what they do on a daily basis. It is not uncommon for several structure fires to be going on around the city at any given time. Most of the departments work seems to be after midnight. The galleries below are a small sampling of the fires that the city encountered while we were in town. The first gallery is from Highland Park, which is surrounded by Detroit city limits. They operate around 5 or 6 firefighters on duty at a time, and rarely give, or receive mutual aid. I would like to thank them for their hospitality during our trip!
