2014 Detroit MI Trip 03/20-03/24/2014

From March 20th through March 24st Ken LaBelle, Dave Cinq Mars, Bob Myers, Sean McNulty, Doug Dow, Scott Langille, Adam Salmon and myself visited the city of Detroit MI to observe their fire department in action. During the trip, we took in box alarms all around the city and watched as Detroit firefighters battled over 20-fires that we took in during our 5-day visit. These were only fires that we observed, as there were several others during our stay, some occurring simultaneously. The Detroit Fire Department does an amazing job battling the extremely high numbers of fires in their city, despite budget and staffing cuts. Arson is a major problem in the city, and it is fueled by an extremely high number of vacant structures in the city. In 2010, the city of Detroit's population was reported to be 713, 777. Compare that to the population of 1,849,568 in 1950 at the height of the auto industry in the motor city. It is truly amazing to watch the firefighters of the city battle day after day, night after night the seemingly endless number of building fires, in very dangerous situations. The images in these galleries are proof of their high skill set in their profession. The speed that these fires are knocked down and placed under control is a sight to see.
