09/23/2010 - Around 1400 hours Detroit companies responded to the area of Erwin at Marion for a reported gas leak. First arriving companies found a 12" gas main that had broken under the surface and blew a hole in the ground. Due to the active leak, a box alarm, and a level-3 hazardous materials response (the highest Detroit has) was requested, bringing several additional companies to the scene. Evacuations of local homes in the area were also ordered. The gas company responded and was able to shut down the pipe within an hour.
