09/16/2021 - PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND (PROVIDENCE COUNTY) - Around 1130 hours on the morning of Thursday, September 6, 2021 the Providence Fire Department responded to Hillside Village at 40 Leander Street for a box alarm. Companies arrived to find nothing showing from the 6-story apartment building. Engine-6 found the alarm panel showed floor-4. As they arrived to the fourth floor to investigate, they encountered smoke and sprinkler activation in apartment 416. A kitchen fire was discovered in apartment 416 on the fourth floor. As a precaution, Battalion-2 struck a second alarm. Crews worked to knock down the fire and evacuate all of the remaining occupants of the building. The heavy fire was quickly knocked down with the use of a hand line and the sprinkler system. One victim on the third floor required EMS due to a medical problem, it was unsure if it was related to the fire. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
