06/18/2019 - ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - Around 2145 hours on the evening of Tuesday, June 18. 2019 the Abington Fire Department responded to the area of 1060 Plymouth Street (Route-58) for a reported house fire. Companies arrived to find heavy smoke showing from an occupied two-story wood framed dwelling. As firefighters approached the scene, they were informed of a resident still inside the house. Companies immediately struck a second alarm. An unconscious, 57-year old male resident was pulled from the vicinity of the fire by a neighbor Kurt Knepshield, Abington Police Officer Shawn Kelly, and assisted by Abington Police Sergeant Mark Kilgour. The victim was pulled from the house and a Whitman Ambulance was requested immediately to the scene. The victim was unconscious and lifesaving efforts were initiated by Abington Firefighters who were on the scene. Firefighters quickly rushed the patient to the awaiting ambulance. Boston MedFlight was requested, but was unavailable due to weather. The Whitman Ambulance transported the patient to the Massachusetts General Hospital with paramedics on-board from Whitman, Rockland and Abington. While lifesaving interventions were on-going with the patient who was pulled from the building, firefighters continued to battle the fire which was on the second floor. The fire was knocked down quickly and was contained to the second floor and attic area of the home. The cause of the fire was determined to be electrical in nature after an investigation by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office. No other injuries were reported. Mutual aid companies from Whitman, Rockland, Holbrook, Weymouth, East Bridgewater, Norwell and Hanson assisted during this incident.
