03/28/2012 - A little after the eleven o'clock hour on the morning of Wednesday, March 28, 2012, Whitman Fire/Rescue struck their Box-66 for a reported house fire at 220 Washington Street, near Auburn Street. Car-2, Car-3 and Engine-2 responded. Car-2 arrived to find a two-family, two-story occupied wood framed dwelling that had been evacuated. Upon inspection, a fire was found on the rear porch of the home, that had extended to the walls of the house, near the rear sliding door. A pre-connected hose line was stretched off of Engine-2 and the fire was knocked down with the hand line. When Ladder-1 and Engine-1 arrived to the scene as manpower permitted, crews opened up the exterior and interior walls to check for extension into the home. The interior of the home was checked for fire extension with the use of thermal image camera, one of which was recently purchased and put into service by the department. The cause of the fire is under investigation, although the cause may lie in the improper disposal of smoking materials. No injuries were reported. The Whitman Police assisted on the scene and Plymouth County Sheriffs Department BCI unit was called to the scene, along with the building and wiring inspectors.
