03/26/2020 - WEYMOUTH, MASSACHUSETTS (NORFOLK COUNTY) - Around 2030 hours on the evening of Thursday, March 26, 2020 the Weymouth Fire Department responded to Shea Memorial Drive near Houghton Road for a reported building fire. This is in the Union Point development which is the former South Weymouth Naval Air Station. Companies arrived to find heavy fire in a large, irregular shaped building. A working fire was requested and companies immediately went to big lines and ladder pipes. Crews worked to secure water supplies and feed the several large lines. A special call for an additional ladder was requested about 15-minutes later, bringing the Hingham Quint-1 from coverage to the scene. Approximately 15-minutes after that a second alarm was requested, bringing additional companies to work and cover. The building was well involved on-arrival and fire rapidly consumed the building. The fire building was five-large rectangular shaped buildings all connected together. When the South Weymouth Naval Air Station was in operation until late 1997, this large building served as the Bachelor Officers Quarters. This building reportedly was set for demolition as the Union Point development expands. No injuries were reported. The building was a total loss. Firefighters remained on-scene throughout the night and the following morning overhauling and extinguishing hot spots. The fire is considered suspicious, as the property had not been occupied for an extended period of time and there were no utilities to the property. The cause of the fire is under investigation by the Massachusetts State Fire Marshal's Office.
