03/22/2017 - ABINGTON, MASSACHUSETTS (PLYMOUTH COUNTY) - Around 1920 hours the Abington Fire Department received a box alarm for a fire alarm activation at 71 Shaw Avenue, an apartment building maintained by the Abington Housing Authority. While companies were en route, they were advised a second caller reported a fire in the building. Companies arrived to find a fire in a first floor apartment. A working fire was requested, bringing mutual aid engine companies to the scene from Holbrook and Brockton. Crews laid a four inch supply line from the hydrant and stretched a pre-connected hand line in to the first floor apartment. The fire was quickly knocked down by the aggressive interior attack. The fire was reportedly contained to the bedroom of the first floor apartment. The Abington Fire Department reported that eight people were affected by the fire, with four requiring alternative shelter and air from the American Red Cross. Ages of the affected were between 42 and 88 years of age. One cat was rescued from the apartment. No injuries were reported.
