I wondered why I got the "jelly bean" effect on these cats. Took several @ the cat show with good results.
Got this reply from a buddy on the Olympus forum. I LOVE the internet!!

Not all critters have it, but the ones adapted to night foraging do. The walleye, for example, has it. Cats, certain monkeys and bats, etc. have that layer. It's called the tapetum lucidum (spelling approximate), and it sits at the back of the eye like a big mirror. Its job is to send light bouncing around the inside of the eye so more receptors can sense it and make the best possible use of a low-light image.

Deer have this too, hence the "deer in the headlights" look.
