Beach at Dusk*
by Justin Miller

The sun has gone to sleep for the night. The lifeguards have gone home. The suntanners and beachgoers have left. The waves lap gently upon the shore - the only remaining sound. The skies a watercolor of pastels and soft greys...the moon not yet woken up. The sand still retains its residual warmth from the sunny day, but the night air has cooled. Sitting on the sand, alone on the beach, listening to the waves and watching the water glisten under the last colors of the sky slowly fading to darkness, calmness is unavoidable.

I'm sitting right there beside you, Justin. Nothing in the world calms me more than sitting on the beach at quiet time of nightfall or dawn.

ahhhhhhhh

Thanks all. This was an older 717 capture...I went out on the beach anticipating a big full moon rise - the clouds were too heavy to catch it, but they gave me a completely different opportunity, which ended up rewarding in its own right.

Love your evening beach scene, Justin. I'm getting sleepy just looking at it.

Justin: Your capture of the sky, your description (as bottles has mentioned), the calmness of the water, and the overall colors (of the sky again) make this picture work so well for me. I enjoy asymmetry frequently and your framing pleased me ;) The crispy sharpness (probably due to the f/8 and the 17mm) is a nice counterpoint to the soft, puffy clouds.

Ah, I go right back to the colors again...

Justin, I like all of your entries along with their interesting captions! Reading the captions make me feel like I'm right there :-) I think this photo is my favorite, especially considering the theme of calm. I don't know what could be any calmer than this beach at dusk. Even without being there, I do hear those waves lapping gently upon the shore. Very nice indeed!
