Walking the Streets
by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

(of my neighborhood, that is!) I live on Capitol Hill, an old, mainly Victorian in style, district full of very unique houses. I simply love to walk around and admire the various kinds of architecture, often photographing it when I can. It's also a very friendly place, with neighbor knowing neighbor and complete strangers greeting you on the street. We have dog-friendly parks (and almost everybody here has a dog of one kind or another), a wonderful 19th century market, great little shops and restaurants and even a Metro stop for easy transportation. It's just blocks from the US Capitol (well, in my case, 11) and the National Mall with all its monuments and the Smithsonian Institution museums. In short, it's a wonderful place to live! For my impressions of Capitol Hill, please pay a visit to http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/rediscovering_capitol_hill__washington_d_c

This was taken on East Capitol Street N.E., home of many spectacular mansions. (Wish I had one, but they're nice to admire anyway!)

I am a city-walker as well, Helen, and I walk through the streets every day: even in a big city it gives *calm*. I am fascinated by your capacity to have a *look* at Washington D.C. as if it felt as "exotic" to you as were your former Turkish surroundings... ;-) -- db.

Walking the streets has been my habit and the help of my sanity for most of my life. Having a safe and beautiful place to walk can help a person to be calm. Your neighbourhood seems quite exotic to me.

Helen, walking can definitely have a calming effect on us and you have such a nice area to enjoy your walking. This is really a nice shot of some interesting houses. And my goodness, even the roof shingles form interesting designs on some of them! Very nice entry for the challenge.

What a beautiful place in which you live. Walking along those lovely streets would, indeed, be calming. Reminds me of the Fan District of Richmond. Very nice.
