'The Awakening'

by Helen Betts

Washington, D.C.

We went to this park yesterday for a shot of this sculpture in freezing weather only to find not much light and too many people http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/91282302 . Went back today, a stunning day, hoping for a break in the crowds, but I only managed to capture one image out of 35 with no visitors getting in my way. For a view of the entire sculpture, see http://www.pbase.com/helenpb/image/91322751

"The Awakening" is a 100-foot statue of a giant embedded in the earth, struggling to free himself. It was created by J. Seward Johnson, Jr. and installed at Hains Point (East Potomac Park), Washington, D.C., in 1980 for the International Sculpture Conference Exhibition. It proved so popular, however, that 27 years after the event it still remains, even though the National Park Service admits that the "temporary permit" has long since expired.

The statue consists of five separate pieces buried in the ground, giving the impression of a panicked giant trying to pull himself to the surface. The left hand and right foot barely protrude, while the bent left leg and knee jut into the air. The 17-foot right arm and hand climb above the observer while the bearded face, with the mouth in mid-scream, struggles to emerge from the surrounding earth. (From Wikipedia)

Helen, that is an impressive shot of an impressive statue. Because of the size not an easy task to shoot when you want to show off all the parts and their size. This could be a perfect shooting opportunity on a misty morning. Very fitting for this challenge, thanks for entering.

This is a stunner Helen. I think the trees relative to the lamp post give the statue the scale needed and it is a grand scale. People in the frame for this purpose would have made it sort of touristy, snapshotish, not what you would want. Fantastic. Lora

Execellent, Helen. I must say you know where to find such magnificent subjects for photography!

Helen - this is magnificent. I mean....the sculpture on its own is impressive but you not only captured the giant - but also the beautiful sky filled with wisps of clouds and a tear-drop lamp post with a faint glimpse of the city in the distance. The blue-gray cast to the giant compliments the entire piece. A masterpiece, Helen and yes indeed - as Jerry said, fits the theme to a T.

Helen, beautiful shot of this very interesting sculpture. I did not know this existed; now I know what I want to see whenever I get over there again.

Thanks for your comments, Katherine and Jerry. About the people, Gerry -- I tried so hard not to have any people in the picture! The visitors to this sculpture sort of turn into (or are) kids, climbing up the leg, posing in the hand and foot (which you can't see here), sitting on his face and so on. I just really preferred the giant by himself, but there are some people in one of the pictures I linked to below. Helen

Great find, Helen! Sure fits the theme to a "T". Would be nice to see a person in this scene for scale. Hard to imagine that arm is 17 feet high!

Great shot - I love the composition, colors, and the detail in the sculpture! That is a huge giant - I bet he scares the kids!
