August 1989 Colleen Prohaska

Hoover Dam
by Colleen Prohaska

Nevada and Arizona

This is a scanned photo from the Canon AE-1 film camera. I have always liked this picture and I was so lucky to get it. I had taken off from Las Vegas and was headed to Kansas City. I had picked a window seat on the left side of the plane and had out my map, binoculars, and camera. The problem was that it was cloudy and I could not see any land. I waited for a long time, my face never leaving the window. Finally, at the critical moment, the clouds opened up just as the plane traveled over Hoover Dam, and I got my shot! Seconds later the cloud gap closed up and the land was hidden again. You can see the cloud shadows all over this landscape, but the dam is in sunlight.

Thank you Denise and Artic fox. It's an oldie but a goodie and to this day I remember the sense of awe I had at the timing.

Great shot, Colleen. Isn't it wonderful when those clouds part and you are blessed with a vision like this!!! It happened to me over Monument Valley one time and I have never forgotten that moment!! Nice work.

Colleen - a great capture. Really shows off the rugged terrain. Very nice!
