I took the picture about 5 PM. The soft light illuminated from the front and reflected from the concave walls of the alcove to reveal the subtle colors of the scene.

Thanks for your compliments. The village was in a huge shadowed alcove in the side of a cliff. I shot it from about a quarter mile away with the camera steadied on a handrail. When there, it's easy to imagine the inhabitants growing crops, making objects from local materials, defending against marauders...
