Not really hot, it just looks that way :-)
This is an actual photo (even the black background is natural). The only post processing was sharpening (and the added border of course).
What the heck is it?

Well, Tabrizi was pretty close. Actually, it's a clear cut-glass bud vase, sitting on a clear glass table. A small orange light was placed under the table, directly below the vase. All other lights were turned off and the shot was taken looking straight down into the vase. The small light only penetrated the vase, leaving the background area completely black.
