Hurricane Battered*
by Justin Miller

Boca Raton, Florida

My neighborhood road in the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Wilma. We were hit head-on by this category 2 to 3 hurricane, with the front wall delivering sustained winds of 103MPH and the back wall hitting an even-stronger 110MPH (much to the surprise of the forecasters, who had predicted the storm would weaken as it crossed from gulf waters over the Florida peninsula). In her wake, 9 days without electricity, phones, or drinkable water, 2 months of driving around town with no traffic signals at any intersection, and months of debris cleanup and waiting for roof repairs. (also, due to all of the world attention on the catastrophic hurricane Katrina a month earlier, those devastated by hurricane Rita in W Louisiana & Texas, and the ravaged South Florida under hurricane Wilma received barely any media attention at all. Katrina deserved the attention...but in any other year, Wilma's damage would have been one of the year's top stories...which really demonstrates how horrible a year 2005 was for natural disasters!).
