Joliet, Illinois is a haunting town. The Des Plaines River flows through it. This morning the air temperature was about zero, and as the river flowed it gave up streams of mist. Right next to the river, on a wall supporting the bridge from which I shot the river there was a mural, one of many in this town, but showing the wear of time (see the crease across her face). The image here is part of a mural showing women working for the World War II effort... Rosie the Riveter types. There was a ghostliness about the two which belonged together, hence the image. There is more to Joliet...it is one of the first towns on the old Route 66 which ran from Chicago to California, and there are markers to it everywhere. The old Route 66 was lost when the interstate system was introduced in the late 50's but it persists in remnants, another ghostly presence, and utterly fascinating. Here's to the ghosts of Joliet!
