Thank you all...I'm flattered, as I don't often use flash. I was on job for this one shooting an event, and mixed in some more fun or artistic shots in between the people shots.

Simon - thank you for the extensive information. You would love this place; it is a very large private collection - they have over 90 organs, and in the central section have pipes well over 40 feet tall for their grand Wurlitzers. This was a more modest pipe organ intended for installing in a large home or castle. The checkerboard pattern had baffle flaps that were controlled by the organist to change the tone of the pipes (it sounds as if you would have already known that!). I have read a little bit about the male and female symbolism in geometric shapes, materials, and designs...but rarely remember to pay attention to it. I'll have to pay more attention to this interesting flourish in the future!

Hi Justin. I have heard an organ with a similar pipe setup and it was magnificent being played by a skilled musician (who just happens to be my wife's sister : Robyn). Impressive dichotomies of wood and steel / round and square. There's obvious thought gone in to the presentation of that organ with the checkboard pattern of the wood background symbolising 'male' - whereas the pipes symbolise 'female' (rectangle = male. oblong/round = female). Once known - you will see the obvious use of these symbols everywhere. Gustav Klimt wove it in to such works as The Kiss and Danae. Nice photo. Cheers.

I was actually on a photography job Friday night, shooting an event at a private museum. The private collector owns dozens of pipe organs and player organs and pianos, as well as collector cars and antiques. A guest organist played the various pieces for the event, and I photographed for the group that hired out the museum.

Thank you for the compliments!

Nice symmetry and exposure here, Justin...that organ is a beauty. I bet the music is just as impressive. Good idea...where did you take this shot? MFC
