Here lies...*

St. Kitts, Leeward Islands

An old gravestone set in the lawn of an old lava-stone church on the island of St. Kitts. The church, in the town of Bassetere, has been rebuilt twice after damage from fire and volcanic eruption since the days when British merchantmen and sailors visited, lived, and died on the island.

It is, isn't it?! 1754. There were dozens of them ranging from mid-1700s to early 1800s, during Britian's build-up of naval force in the Caribbean. Admiral Nelson controlled the fleet from Antigua - he of course went on to destroy the French navy in the Battle of Trafalgar, killed in the battle and forged as a legend forever with his lopsided victory that essentially ended the French empire. BTW - this stone was laid flat on the ground...I shot downward, applied some perspective correction, and boosted contrast a bit to bring out the faded engraving. Thanks for the comments!

Golly that's really an old gravestone. You sure did a good job of capturing it, I've often had problems getting the engraving to show up well enough on this type of shot. Looks like it was out of the direct sun, which was good. Another very nice entry Justin and thanks for the interesting information in the caption area as well.
