3rd Place
Generations Apart

by Helen Betts

Ankara, Turkey

I went up to my favorite part of Ankara today -- the very old, very conservative Kale (citadel) area. I brought prints of the many pictures I had taken of a group of ladies and their children for the Pathways Challenge with me, and they were absolutely delighted and asked me to take more pictures of them. This is an economically depressed area, and I'm certain that they don't have any cameras or computers, so the idea that someone would want to photograph them and actually remember to bring them the prints seemed to suprise them. In fact, instead of trying to sell me things, they gave me presents today, a real departure from the norm.

I chose this image because I felt it represented young and old, one generation and another (grandmother and grandson), and more importantly, the new and old Turkey.

Helen,
Really tempted! I sent a note to your galleries. Good to hear that the H1 sepia setting works so well. I like the skin tones. The indirect lighting gave you very good dynamic range. Well done!

Hi Roberta, I just used the sepia setting on the H1 for this series of pictures. I took color ones as well so I guess I could have converted them, but for those I entered in the Challenge I liked the already sepia images the best so had to make them work. (Actually, I did almost no processing on the two in eligible; the Exhibition entry was more problematic.) I haven't yet tried the B&W setting but perhaps I should. In truth, I don't much care for sepia or B&W but for the shots of the ladies and of the old town, it seemed perfect. How tempted are you? :-) Helen

Helen,
Now that you are tempting me with the H1... did you take a color image then convert in PS or did you use the Sepia setting on the H1? Have you tried the B&W setting on the H1 yet or do you find you would rather do the conversion in PS?

Helen, the sepia fits perfect on this one. I also like the contras of the old and young, the texture of the background wall is a plus. Jesus

Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful comments! I plan to print this picture and give it to this lady, and I'm sure she'll be delighted to know it was so well received. And R.J. -- what a pleasant surprise to hear from you after such a very long time!! Helen

Helen,
You managed to capture great warmth and charm in your subjects, giving them a personality that comes across easily and directly. The lighting really helps to capture the more intricate detail in the patterned fabrics, and the condition and texture of the background provides an excellent counterpoint to the woman and child. Really excellent photography.- R.J.

Superb photojournalism, Helen. You captured so much of the people and their lives, and their expressions are beautiful. You've obviously won their trust by spending time with them. Wonderful image! Bev

Absolutely delightful and super shot, Helen! I love the rigid pose of the old lady, trying to look her best for the camera, and the more relaxed, impish pose of the little grandson. The detal and contrast are exemplary and the sepia works soooo well for this shot. Very well done, indeed!

Helen,
The sepia works so well with your lovely portrait of the grandmother and grandson. The fine clarity and detail of the clothing really stands out nicely against the rich textures of the building. The skin tones are silky and appealing. I'd say you did a fine job and I'm delighted to see such a nice image in the eligible gallery on our first weekend!
