This is a closeup of a Japanese woodblock of a Kyoto scene by Clifton Karhu. It's part of a set of three: the original block (this one), which has been made unusable for more prints by the artist's mark in red up in the corner; an intermediate, two-tone print; and the final woodblock print, the last made from this block. Helen, I've seen and admired many wood block prints but never actually seen a wood block close up. I really like the grain in the block formed naturally and by the artist. Very nice example.

Beautiful detailed wood carving - I love the even lighting and the bit of red color in the corner!

Thanks, Deb! It's lit by natural light. We don't get any direct sunlight in our living room, but in the afternoon the building across from us gets blasted by the sun, so it's actually the sun reflecting off that apartment building onto the woodblock, with contrast boosted in PS. Helen
