6th Place (tie)
Where the Heart Is

by Helen Betts

Istanbul, Turkey

An old house (yes, it's inhabited) in Istanbul's Zeyrek district. A famous mosque currently under restoration sits behind it.

Thank you all for your comments. It's sad, but this is not an unusual dwelling in the larger cities of Turkey. This appears to be an old home that is still inhabited, but there are countless communities of "gecekondu," literally "put up overnight" that are in effect shantytowns lacking basic services. This isn't the best photograph technically, but I felt this house had real character, plus I liked the children hanging out the window and woman in front. Helen

What a sad commentary on society that people are forced to live in these conditions. Of course, this is paradise compared to what some New Orleans residents are experiencing tonight.

Wow! I cannot believe it is still standing in this condition! How sad that people should have to live like this. :( ~ Lonnit

Oh wow, Helen! What a capture! The longer I look at this image, the more I see. I like the spots of color in, (and hanging out of), the windows. It took me a moment to realize that there are two women(?) looking out the first floor window. In the building next door, is that someone peering from behind a curtain at you?---Deb

Very interesting old wooden building - it looks like it could cave in any moment! I hope there's no young kids that have to live there.
